<The Women>

Directed by Diane English.

Main characters: Meg Ryan (Mary Haines), Annette Bening (Sylvia Fowler), Eva Mendes (Crystal Allen), Debra Messing (Edie Cohen), Jada Pinkett Smith (Alex Fisher).

I didn't see the trailer or read any introduction of this movie before, and was expecting to see an imitation of Sex and the City before entering the cinema. Quite wrong and mislead was I, because it turned out to be very far away from Sex n the City.

The story takes place in NY as well, and it's about 4 different women also, but I don't see 4 charming ladies wrapped in designer's clothes, sipping champagne and talking about love. There's relationship between husband & wife, mother & daughter, employer & employee, and of course, there's friendship.

What I like best of this movie is that it deals betrayal and forgiveness. Some other movies, like Closer, talks about it as well, but with a different touch. Meg Ryan doesn't really make much progress in her acting, but she did a nice job bringing out the character of Mary Haines. The vulnerability and unspeakable anger buried under her effort to perform multitasking, the frustration she feels when faced with overwhelming pressure (from Crystal Allen, from her daughter, from the fact that she's sacrificing everything and nobody's satisfied with what she does)--I can feel these emotions conveyed through her eyes, her body languages, and the tone of her speaches.

Another interesting feature is that there's literally NO MAN involved in this film! Well, I did see a man's legs walking the street in the beginning of the movie (or they belong to a woman also?), and in the end there is a boy delivered by Edie, but overall it's really fun to enjoy a movie without men. This means that this movie is about women, and women only. There's no men's point of view, and there's no need to be "objective".  After all, doesn't the title show it all clearly--The Women!
